Its famous fishnet pattern, a hit in the US, started in 1858 when an artist painted a fish - scale design from a Chinese plate on a rooster figurine to mimic feathers. Every Herend figurine is hand - made in Hungary. The Tesserae Tortoise, available in a limited run of 250 pieces, was inspired by the inevitable breakage at the Herend manufactory. Named after mosaic pieces, its shell features a mosaic - like design made up of 38 different Herend patterns. It's a blend of East and West, past and present. Four chinoiserie patterns line the center of the turtle's back, with the Sèvres Petites Roses pattern in the middle, inspired by French art. Fruits and flowers adorn the rest of the shell. The tortoise is painted in a new key - lime fishnet color that brings out the subtleties of various greens. It takes 5 Herend artists a total of 19 hours to complete the painting.
